What is an eating disorder?
Eating disorders are serious and complex mental health conditions. Characterised by abnormal eating habits, which can severely impact physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.
An eating disorder is a mental health condition that involves persistent disturbances in eating behaviour, often driven by distressing thoughts and emotions about food, body weight, and shape.
Eating disorders can affect anyone of any age, race, gender, and those individuals strugglingmay be all different shapes and sizes. Not everyone affected by an eating disorder will ‘look thin or ill’. People may gain, lose, or experience no obvious change to their weight.

People with eating disorders can be diagnosed with:
→ Anorexia nervosa: Characterised by an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image, leading to severe restriction of food intake and often excessive exercise.
→ Bulimia nervosa: Involves cycles of binge eating followed by purging comportamientos such as vomiting, excessive exercise, or the use of laxatives.
→ Binge eating disorder: Marked by recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food in a short period, often accompanied by feelings of loss of control and guilt.
→ Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID): ARFID involves a persistent failure to meet nutritional needs due to a lack of interest in eating, avoidance based on the sensory characteristics of food, or concern about the consequences of eating, such as choking.
→ Otros specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED): OSFED includes eating disorders that do not fit the criteria for the above categories but still cause significant distress or impairment. Examples include atypical anorexia nervosa, where weight is not below normal, and purging disorder, where individuals purge without binge eating.
Eating disorders can have profound and wide-ranging effects:
→ Físico health complications: Such as malnutrition; severe nutrient deficiencies can lead to weakened immune systems, muscle loss, and organ damage. Electrolyte imbalances and malnutrition can cause irregular heart rhythms, heart failure, and other cardiovascular problems. Extreme and dangerous dieting practices puede cause gastrointestinal problems, y damage to the digestive system, leading to issues such as acid reflux, stomach ulcers, and bowel irregularities.
→ Mental health challenges: Many individuals with eating disorders also suffer from anxiety, depression, or substance abuse disorders. Eating disorders often involve obsessive thoughts about food, weight, and body image, significantly impairing daily functioning.
→ Social and emotional impact: As with many mental health conditions, individuals struggling with an eating disorder can suffer from problems due to isolation, oftenwithdrawing from social activities and relationships due to their preoccupation with food and body image. Eating disorders can contribute to low self-esteem, a negative self-image and low self-worth, exacerbating mental health struggles.
